Marine battery coolant is a solution used inside marine batteries to keep them cool while being charged. The coolant mixes with the acid in the battery, keeping it from boiling over and causing damage to the battery. When using a marine battery without coolant, you have to be very careful about overcharging the battery, which can cause it to boil over.  

Importance Of Marine Battery Coolant

Marine battery coolant is necessary if you have a wet cell battery as it helps it to run efficiently. But there are other types you can use. If your battery is sealed, you do not need any coolant at all. Marine batteries come in different shapes and sizes, so make sure you get the right kind of fluid for yours before you buy it.  

The three main kinds of marine battery coolants on the market are:

  • Water with antifreeze and corrosion inhibitors;
  • Water with corrosion inhibitors; and
  • Water with no additives.

What Is A Marine Battery?

Types of Marine Starting Batteries

There are three types of marine starting batteries: Wet cell, gel cell, and AGM (absorbed glass mat).
  • Wet Cell
Wet cell marine batteries are the least expensive battery available for boats because they use regular lead-plates suspended in sulfuric acid. The major drawback is that they must be kept upright at all times, or they will leak acid and die.
  • Gel Cell
Gel batteries use a gel instead of a liquid electrolyte, making them less likely to catch fire or leak than conventional SLAs. They also have higher energy density than traditional SLAs, meaning they can pack more energy into a smaller package. They are particularly advantageous for boaters who require smaller and lighter systems.
  • AGM(Absorbed Glass Mat)
AGM Battery, also known as Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery, is a sealed, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery. It is designed to prevent gas recombination by absorbing electrolytes in a fiberglass mat separator. It is sealed and does not require refilling, so it is maintenance-free. Marine battery coolant is a safe, environmentally-friendly way of protecting your boat’s battery from the damaging effects of electrolysis. A battery that’s been treated with marine battery coolant can last three times longer than a conventionally-treated one, which only makes the initial investment more appealing.
